Kia ora, I’m Rach McDonell, and for 2 terms this year I am stepping into the role of Acting Principal at Glenavon School. This year also marks my 12th year at Glenavon, a place that is incredibly close to my heart. I’m excited about the year ahead and grateful for the opportunity to continue serving and leading this wonderful school community.
Outside of school, I love spending time with my partner, Ash, and our boys, Mako and Jet. We enjoy being outdoors, making the most of family time, and pottering around at home.
Every parent wants their child to feel safe, connected, and excited about coming to school each day. At Glenavon, we work hard to ensure this is a reality for all our tamariki. I am passionate about learning beyond the classroom, curriculum innovation, and creating meaningful opportunities that support every learner to thrive. As I begin my fifth year here at Glenavon, I feel incredibly lucky to reflect on some truly special years. Glenavon really is a special place – filled with diverse students, dedicated and hardworking staff, and a beautiful community. Coming together to support the learners of our kura is something I am so proud of, and I’m excited to be stepping into my fifth year as part of this community.
This year, I step into the role of Assistant Principal for the Manu Syndicate, and you’ll find me in Tūī with a gorgeous class – including some students I was lucky enough to teach back in Year 3, who I now get to work with again in Year 7. What a full-circle moment!

This year marks my sixth year at Glenavon, and I’m excited to be teaching a Year 6 class in Tōtara. I’m also honoured to be taking on the role of Rākau Team Leader this year. I’m passionate about identifying and celebrating students’ strengths, and supporting them to build strong self-efficacy – not just as learners, but as individuals. Moana Team Leader & Kekeno Classroom Teacher

This is my 6th year at Glenavon School, and I love being part of the amazing Glenavon School community. This year, I’m excited to be teaching Year 2 and 3 students in my class, Kekeno. I’m also stepping into a new role as Team Leader for Moana, the junior part of our kura. Kekeno will be a creative and caring classroom that encourages students to collaborate, explore their interests, and enjoy learning together. I love helping tamariki discover the special things they are good at and supporting them to grow in confidence. I love teaching literacy, art, and maths, as well as getting outdoors to play games, explore, and have fun.

I have the privilege of teaching New Entrants for the second time in the Inanga classroom at Glenavon School. I have been in the teaching profession since 2015 and am passionate about creating an inclusive, supportive learning environment that empowers children to build strong foundations for lifelong learning. I believe in nurturing positive relationships with teachers and peers, affirming each child’s identity and creating a learning space where children feel supported, confident, and ready to thrive.

In 2026 I will be teaching Year 1, my favourite year level, as it is such a fun and exciting time for learning. Building strong relationships is very important to me, and I value working in partnership with tamariki and whānau. I believe parents and caregivers are their ākonga’s first educators, and that feeling safe and welcome at school is key to every child reaching their full potential.

I’m excited to be teaching Year 3 in Wheke this year at Glenavon. Our classroom will be a welcoming, energetic space where creativity, teamwork, and perseverance are celebrated. Like the wheke, we’ll be adaptable, curious, and willing to tackle challenges together as we grow our confidence and learning. I’m also thrilled to be stepping into the role of Arts Curriculum Lead, alongside my work as IT and Media Lead, and look forward to continuing to grow our tamariki’s love of the Arts across the kura.

Learning Support Coordinator
Kia ora koutou. I am delighted to be working as our Learning Support Coordinator this year. Having been an RTLB, this is a role I feel very passionate about. One of my main guiding principles is for students to experience a genuine sense of belonging. I believe this comes through us meeting children exactly where they are and starting from there. We all have different learning styles, I can’t wait to help figure those out and create wonderful learning experiences for our tamariki.
Outside of work you will find me spending time with my gorgeous twin niece and nephew, exploring this beautiful land. We especially love swimming, reading lots of stories and snacking!

This year, I am excited to be stepping into the role of Bilingual Coordinator, a new challenge that I am really looking forward to. A key focus of my role is creating a safe, inclusive space where students feel confident developing their English while celebrating their home languages and cultures. 2026 is my sixth year at Glenavon and I could talk about our students all day – they are kind, bold, creative, and inquisitive, making every day so much fun.
I am so excited to be pivoting this year from classroom teaching to focussing on Maths Learning Support across the school, as well as managing our beautiful Library and Resource spaces.
Outside of school, I love spending time with my husband and family, getting hands-on with crafty hobbies like pottery and sewing, working on my small veggie garden, reading, and walking my dog Ranger.

Community HUB Coordinator
I’m RJ Thomson, and I have the privilege of serving as the Coordinator of the Glenavon Community Hub, a role that allows me to weave together our people, places, and spaces with purpose, and a deep commitment to our local and connected communities.
Glenavon is where my heart is, and our mahi is our love language to this community- circular, meaningful, intentional, reciprocal, and sustainable, always centred on uplifting whānau and honouring the whakapapa of the 0600.
As the Māori Chair Representative for the Kai West Collective, I uphold our Kaupapa Kai Aroha, recognising kai as a taonga shaped by Mana Motuhake o Te Kai and the wellbeing foundations of Te Whare Tapa Whā.
I’m looking forward to ‘doing good stuff together’ in 2026, with care, with integrity, and always with our people at the centre.

Glenavon has been part of my whānau for many years, and I have proudly held the role of Glenavon Community Support Worker for over five years.
My role focuses on providing culturally responsive, strengths-based support to whānau within the community. My practice is grounded in manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and respect, with a strong emphasis on building trusted relationships and supporting equitable access to services and resources.
Looking toward 2026, my commitment is to continue strengthening community wellbeing, empowering whānau, and contributing to a resilient, connected, and thriving Glenavon community.
